I just read an article about a mother in Australia not being able to easily obtain hand sanitiser and basic stocks at the supermarket because of the people who are panic buying large quantities of basic essentials. This made me search for a homemade hand sanitiser solution. Her daughter has cancer so she is rightfully pretty upset that she can’t buy the things that will help keep them all safe while her daughter goes through chemo. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8082773/Newcastle-mum-cancer-stricken-toddler-slams-greedy-toilet-paper-hoarders.html
Having gone through chemo myself I know how dangerous it can be to come down with a virus when your immune system is being attacked by chemotherapy. You don’t have the natural reserves to fight any virus so it is essential that you stay safe.
I felt the same wave of anger when I was speaking to my 83 year old Mum. She can’t find any hand sanitiser at all and she is another person who needs to stay healthy as she is at greater risk of serious complications if she catches the coronavirus. Then I talked to my son in Melbourne who can’t find toilet paper. Really – I hope by the time I visit he has remedied that situation !!
I struggle to understand the mentality of people who by their selfishness are putting others at risk and don’t even get me started on the ones who bought bulk loads of hand sanitiser and are selling it for 5 times the price or more on internet sites. Often the people who need it most are the ones who can least afford it. I wish people could remember to be kind and think of others during times like this.
I posted a wee while ago some natural ways to boost your immunity and some tips on avoiding catching a virus or cold.https://www.lynleyclarkwellness.co.nz/natural-ways-to-boost-your-immunity/
Most importantly to start with here is what the people in the know suggest when it comes to staying healthy. I know for me the hardest thing will be not touching my face as it is something I do frequently through out the day with out even being aware of it.
Tips To Help You Avoid Catching a Virus
-
- Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 to 30 seconds. The use of antibacterial and alcohol-based soaps is recommended.
- Carry a purse size hand sanitiser with you when you are out. This is a convenient way to ensure your hands stay clean. Use it frequently.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Wear a surgical mask if you are in contact with any one who is unwell. This needs to cover your nose as well.
- Remember if you are feeling unwell, you should restrict your contact with your loved ones to safeguard their health and yours and you should also wear a surgical mask if you are having contact with others. They suggest staying 1 metre away from others if you are unwell or are in self isolation.
Hand Sanitiser Solution
Hand Sanitiser Recipe
If you have had no luck being able to buy a hand sanitiser and want to do everything you can to avoid getting unwell here is a hand sanitiser solution. I DO NOT CLAIM THAT THIS SANITISER WILL KILL THE CORONAVIRUS OR THAT IT IS AS EFFECTIVE AS BOUGHT ONES. However it has got to be better than nothing at all. I adapted the recipe from this site https://www.livescience.com/coronavirus-diy-hand-sanitizer.html
Here is the version I used as I had these ingredients on hand:
INGREDIENTS – Sanitiser Solution
2/3 of a cup of isopropyl alcohol. I tried it with Vodka but technically it does not have enough alcohol in it to work. Most vodkas are only 40 percent alcohol.
1/3 cup of Aloe Vera Gel – To keep the hands a wee bit softer. Other emollients would work here too.
10 Drops of Essential oils. I used a mix of essential oils that have known antibacterial qualities . Play around with various combinations and find a smell that you love.
Example Essential Oils – Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit ,Tea Tree, Lavender, Doterra On Guard, Peppermint, Eucalyptus
Shake well.
Sanitiser should be applied to all hand surfaces including your wrists and rubbed for about 20 seconds, until it is dry.
Please check for sensitivity first as it could be a tad strong for some and I don’t recommend this for the little ones as they like to lick their fingers!! If you are pregnant or breast feeding please get medical advice before using essential oils.
I am taking some of these bottles to my Mum tomorrow so she has something to tied her over while she is waiting for stocks to be replenished. While I was mixing I also made an all purpose home cleaner that can help disinfect your home ( just incase this is another item to sell out).
I use this recipe around the home all the time because I am trying to avoid cleaning with toxic chemicals. Try this one out too if you get a chance. It is safe for the environment as well as your family.
All Purpose Cleaner Recipe
INGREDIENTS
1/4 Cup of White Vinegar
1 3/4 Cup of Water
30 Drops of Essential Oils – eg: Lavender, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon ( the citrus oils smell lovely and fresh)
Shake well
Stay safe. The coronavirus is an unknown situation and this fact alone can increase peoples levels of anxiety. If you find yourself becoming a bit overawed at the moment try some relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga. See https://www.lynleyclarkwellness.co.nz/helpful-ways-to-cleanse-your-mind/
